What is a 480p resolution?

480p video resolution is a frame of 640 pixels in height and 480 pixels in width. So basically, 480 represents a horizontal dimension of the picture that you watch. The letter P stands for progressive scanning; the technology displays and transmits moving images one by one in a sequence. 480p movies support both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. 480p is not a high definition video format, but it’s quite good regarding video playback and output file size. 480p is the quality which is provided by DVD discs. By the way, you may easily copy them with our DVD copy software. Besides, 480p is quite popular media format among TV broadcasting companies.

What is 1080p?

1080p is video frame of 920 pixels in height and 1080 pixels in width. It’s full high definition video format. 1080p quality is sharper than 720p, which is also high definition format. 1080p quality is available on Blu-ray discs, smartphones, smart TVs and online streaming services. The difference between 1080p HD and 480p

As you can see from the description above, 480p and 1080p files are absolutely different in terms of:

  • quality;
  • size;
  • download time;
  • hardware support.

Let’s weigh up all pros and cons the two technologies have.

Quality. The first thing is picture quality. 1080ps are bright, detailed, sharp. It’s a pleasure to see things as you see them in real world. 480p quality looks good on small screens like mobile phones or tablets. But it looks blurry on a huge plasma TV.

Size. If you plan to download a 480p file, it won’t take long, the file size rather small, and you can upload it to USB or export to your mobile phone. However, if you try to grab 1080p, it would take twice more time in comparison to 480p. High def files need more storage space, and if your data storage drive is limited, you’d better stick to 480p quality. Alternatively, you may reduce the resulted video file size with Freemake conversion software afterwards.

Download time. If you have a stable Internet connection, you can select both formats. Yet, if you try to save bandwidth due to poor Internet access, 1080p isn’t a suitable choice. Besides, if you can notice long clip buffering time or other issues with playback on YouTube, we recommend selecting non-HD standard for download.

Hardware. You can watch 480p clips almost on all devices including personal computers, web browsers, desktop players, smartphones, mobile phones, tablets, TVs, etc. Meanwhile, high def files require more pixels on display to show all the beauty of the data inside. You have to obtain a device with excellent screen resolution. Needless to say, such gadgets cost a pretty penny.

As you can see both technologies have clear drawbacks and strong advantages. Now you have more knowledge, so you can hit the “Download” button in Freemake program more concisely.
