What is MTV?

MTV stands for Music Television. MTV has many years of the history; it was started on August 1, 1981 by John Lack. The first video on the air was The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" after opening phrase "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll" of the host that Saturday noon. The first song ever played on MTV established a unique approach to music consumption for the young generation of these days. Music Television was new and rebellious in the 80s and the 90s. Instead of traditional TV hosts, it brought VJs, instead of classic songs or live stage performance recordings, the channel introduced music clips, a 3 - 4 minute videos with story and clips.

In the 90s, the medium launched two awards: MTV movie awards and MTV music awards. Both awards are known for unusual hosts, wacky red carpet apparel, and crazy live duets. MTV movie awards is famous for the original nomination named: "Best Kiss" which winners used to be Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson, Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst, Sarah Michelle Gellar & Selma Blair, Demi Moore & Woody Harrelson, Jim Carrey & Lauren Holly, Will Smith & Vivica A. Fox, Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore, etc.

MTV Video Music Award honors Video of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Visual Effect, and so on. Top winners by the number of VMA awards are Beyoncé, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Green Day, Aerosmith, Fatboy Slim, A-ha, Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, Jay Z, Pink, Rihanna, Coldplay, Britney Spears, U2, Missy Elliott, Ricky Martin, Nirvana, OutKast, Katy Perry and others.

In the 2000s the channel refused to play music hits and streamed tons of TV shows and full episodes. On of the most popular shows on the schedule list became "MTV unplugged". It’s a live acoustic performance of artists and bands which substitutes real concerts. Another epoch in the outlet history is online streaming on broadcaster site, which is highly valuable since there’s no chance to watch music videos on classic music TV channel.

Now the mass media represents a group of channels including channels dedicated to TV shows and solely music videos of various genres. Yet it can be a problem to find a correct channel number on your cable TV.
