Download & install Freemake software for Windows

To rip a DVD to your computer, you need to download the freeware here. The freeware perfectly works on all the recent Windows platforms including Windows 10, 8, 8.1, 7, Vista.

By default, you download the lightweight online installer version which takes the required components from the Internet during the installation. In case you don't have a stable Internet connection, please get the free offline installer from the Downloads tab.

The installation procedure is simple and fast. Everything you need to do is to read the EULA, choose the location for the program and decide whether you need a desktop and a quick-launch icon. You don't need any additional plugins or libs to rip DVDs. The tool starts automatically after the installation.

Add the DVD disc to rip

Insert a DVD disc into the CD/DVD drive of your computer. Find the "+DVD" button at the top row and click it. Select your DVD drive with the disc, and then a VIDEO_TS folder. Choose the largest .vob file from the list. It's the main DVD movie.

In case your disc contains several episodes, and you want to rip all the movie files, select all VOB videos from the VIDEO_TS folder.

Here you can also choose subtitles and language audio track if the video has several of them. Pay attention to the video info line and select the respective options for subtitles & audio.

You can preview the resulted video from your DVD disc in Freemake editor (double-click the video) to check you made everything correctly.

Choose an output format

Choose an output extension to rip movies from DVD to: AVI, MP4, MKV, MPG, WMV, FLV, SWF, MPG, 3GP. There are also ready profiles for the most popular gadgets: iPhone, iPad, Sony PSP, Android phone & tablets, Xbox, etc.

Decide what you are going to do with the ripped movie. AVI, WMV or MKV are the best options to store the backup on your computer and edit the file. MP4 is ideal for transferring onto smartphones, gaming consoles, tablets, and sharing online. Both AVI and MP4 are good for watching on a TV.

Pick the output format on the formats bar at the bottom of the program.

Adjust ripping parameters

In the new windows of the selected format, you may change the conversion profile or use the standard one.

By default, there comes the "Same as source" preset. It means that the video dimension, bitrate and other settings will be the same as in the original file.

You may change the video resolution and all other parameters like video and audio codec, fps, bitrate, etc. Please don’t choose Full HD options. Due to the nature of the DVD format, the movies in it don’t exist in full high quality dimensions. The highest resolution that the DVD video format can handle is 720x480 pixels per frame for NTSC or 720x576 pixels per frame for PAL.

Rip your DVD to computer

Decide where you want your movie to go. The location can be any folder on your PC hard drive or cloud storage. Start ripping DVD to other digital format by clicking the "Convert" button. The ripping process will take some time depending on your PC capacity. Soon the ripped files will appear in the chosen folder. Now you can transfer the output video files to any portable gadget, edit the output file in other program or simply watch on a PC in good quality.
